Inland Orlando isn't immune to hurricanes. Here's how to vet a community's emergency plan and protect a vulnerable parent before the next storm.

Central Florida sits far enough inland to avoid the worst storm surge, but Orlando-area communities still face days-long power outages, flooding, and the heat that follows. For a frail or memory-impaired senior, a lost air conditioner or interrupted oxygen is the real danger — which is why a facility's emergency plan deserves direct questions.
Florida law requires licensed assisted living and nursing facilities to maintain an emergency power plan capable of keeping residents safe in a outage. Ask specifically: Do you have a permanent generator sized to run cooling, not just lights? What is your evacuation agreement and destination? How do you manage medications and medical equipment during an outage? How will you communicate with families?
For a parent aging in place, prepare a two-week medication supply, copies of the medication list and insurance cards, backup power for medical devices, and a clear evacuation plan that accounts for mobility. If staying home through a storm isn't safe, respite care in a hardened community is worth arranging before the season's first warning.
